Jennifer was back near the docks, close to the stretch where she had met Natasha the previous day. The breakfast van had gone, leaving an empty moss-ridden car park and a trio of seagulls fighting over some remnants. Jennifer was sitting on a bench close to the water’s edge, which, if she twisted, gave her a view of her parked car through a gap in the trees.

She sensed the danger, could almost smell it, yet, for a reason of which she wasn’t quite sure, didn’t feel frightened. Her son was out there and the last thing he’d done before disappearing was tell her that he hadn’t killed his girlfriend. Nobody else might believe that – but Jennifer did, even if a teeny, tiny voice continued to whisper that she could be wrong. That Daniel had a secret life that involved cash and burner phones and drug dealers.

Each time those thoughts appeared, Jennifer shoved them away. It was her exhaustion speaking and she didn’t want to hear it.

Jennifer had deliberately parked in a place that could be a meeting point. She was outside the centre of town, but not outside the boundaries of town itself. It was maybe walking distance to the car dealerships, but nobody was going to walk to a place like this. A secluded car park, hidden from the road by a row of damp trees: The sort of spot she could imagine cheating couples organising affairs. If someone was closely watching a tracking device, it might be a location for a mother to meet her missing son.

Jennifer was wearing her own coat this time; Daniel’s hoody back in her hotel room. She hoped to be able to return it to him one day, when his name was clear. That was her driving motivation – to prove her son’s innocence – every time that niggly voice told her this was a crazy idea.

Because this was a crazy idea.

Someone was tracking her and, in an act she knew was madness, she was now trying to track them.

Jennifer looked up from her phone, returning her attention to her car through the gap in the trees. There was nobody anywhere near, and she considered how long she might wait. If the person who placed the tracker wasn’t baited by her location, then maybe they would be because the device had been turned off, then on. Perhaps they would come to see if something was wrong.

The phone in Jennifer’s hand began to ring. It was work again and she knew she’d have to pick up. One way or another, she had a real life away from Ashington and whatever was happening here.

She answered, expecting it to be her boss, Lisa – but instead it was Caroline from HR. Caroline’s first week in the job had involved her going around the office sticking Post-it notes on anything that was a violation of the staff manual. Anything she considered to be ‘clutter’ – including family photos, charging cables, even someone’s asthma inhaler, had to be tidied away by diktat.
